Advanced Implant 3D Guided Placement

Implant 3D imaging and guided placement

Implant Advance Technology is helping Dentists to Get the whole picture!

Implant treatment planning software gives your dentist three-dimensional information on the anatomy of your mouth:

Patients want to have natural looking implant supported teeth.  Just like building a  house, you need to carefully plan out the implant so that the final result can be visualized even before treatment is started.  There is alot to consider at the planning phase:

• The width, length and density of your jawbone- this will determine the amount of bone and foundation to place your implant.  Just like a house, the implant needs adequate foundation to support it.  The density will affect the healing time of the implant and the number of implants needed.
• The exact location of neighboring tooth roots, nerves, sinus and concavities- there may be vital and important structures in the area where the implants will be place.  It is important to map out these vital structures so that the length, width and angulation of the implant can be determined.
With this precise information, your dentist can start planning the ideal location for your implants, reach the best outcome and show you how your new teeth will look – even before treatment!

Know every detail in advance

Your implant dentist can “virtually” prepare your treatment to the greatest detail; you will receive a much safer and more comfortable treatment. With SimPlant® dental implant planning software and SurgiGuide® dental drill guides, free-hand implant dentistry becomes a thing of the past.

No surprises, maximum comfort

A personalized SurgiGuide® dental drill guide is your dentist’s link between implant planning and actual treatment. It makes sure your dentist performs the procedure safely and according to the plan. A SurgiGuide® dental drill guide fits in your mouth with unparalleled precision during implant treatment and is your guarantee for maximum comfort.

If you want to know how dental implants can improve the quality of your life, contact us today or to just schedule your free consultation appointment. We have offices in both Ottawa and Stittsville.

Family Dentist: Reap the Benefits of a Healthy Mouth

Not only does good oral health care protect your teeth and gums, but it also improves overall wellness. A healthy mouth promotes a healthy body. Start your children off on the right foot by teaching them the importance of dental care at a young age.

As an adult, keep in mind these benefits of making oral health a priority:

Can Reduce Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Numerous studies have found a correlation between inflammation from gum disease and problems such as heart disease, blockages of blood vessels, and strokes. Maintaining optimal oral health can decreases your odds of developing these conditions.

Keeps Your Memory Sharp
According to a report in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, adults with swollen, bleeding gums, referred to as gingivitis, didn’t perform as well on memory and cognitive test as the individuals with healthier mouths.

Lowers Chances of Inflammation and Infection
Poor oral health can contribute to issues in other areas of the body. For example, a link has been found between gum disease and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease that produces inflammation in the joints. Both gum disease and RA have a similar mechanism of destroying connective tissues.

Improves Self-Confidence
If you suffer from decay, gum disease, or worn teeth, you may also experience bad breath and an unsightly appearance. Once you address issues and restore oral health, you will look and feel better.

Supports a Healthy Pregnancy
Increased hormones can result in pregnancy-related gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Some research has linked gum disease to pre-term births and low-birth weight babies. See your dentist after the first trimester to make sure you are in good shape.

Children Dentist: Your Children’s Oral Health at Every Stage

Protecting your child’s smile is a full-time job. From birth to the school years to adolescence and beyond, you need to care for their teeth and gums as well as teach them about the importance of oral health care. The following information will help you accomplish these goals at each stage of development.

Children Dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Infancy
It’s never too early to start dental care. Gently clean your baby’s gums with a damp rag to remove plaque from the gums. As soon as your child’s first tooth appears, brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush. To prevent baby bottle mouth, never put your child to sleep with milk or juice.

The Toddler Years
At this point, you should help your child brush their teeth twice daily. Until age two or three, use training toothpaste so that they don’t ingest too much fluoride and develop fluorosis, white spots on teeth from overexposure to fluoride. Most dentists recommend that you begin regular dental checkups by the time your child turns three.

School-Age Children
By six or seven, your children should be able to brush and floss teeth by themselves, but you may need to inspect their work. Children in this group need to use fluoride toothpaste to help prevent cavities. Encourage your kids to brush for at least two minutes.

Tweens and Teens
Older kids often have busy lives, so make sure dental care remains a priority. Ask your dentist to help reinforce the need for good home hygiene because often tweens and teens listen more intently to the information when it comes from a source other than their parents.

If you have any questions regarding dental hygiene or oral health, contact Capital Smiledocs Dental. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South.

Family Dentist recommends that you smile more…it’s actually good for your health!

Not only does smiling make you look and feel better, it can also offer other benefits. The next time you wonder whether you should smile or not, consider these reasons and flash your pearly whites. Smiling really is good for your overall wellbeing.

• Smiling impacts your mood
When you smile, even if you are feeling blue, you can actually trick your body into improving your mood.
• Smiling affects others
If you smile, you may set off a change reaction, causing others to start smiling too. With a smile, you can spread joy and happiness.
• Smiling reduces stress
By smiling, you will look less worn out, tired and overwhelmed, which can help you feel better about your situation.
• Smiling helps your immune system
Because you are more relaxed when you smile, your immune system actually functions better. You can literally change your body chemistry with a smile.
• Smiling releases endorphins
Research has shown that smiling produces endorphins, serotonin, and natural pain killers; these three chemicals help us feel good.
• Smiling decreases blood pressure
If you have a blood pressure monitor at home, you can test this one out. When you smile, you will see a noticeable difference in the readings.
• Smiling fights aging
The muscles used in smiling lift your face, which makes you look younger. And it’s much cheaper than a face lift.
• Smiling can help you live longer

How do I prevent cavities?

Tooth decay is caused by the bacteria and plaque that develop on our teeth. Protect yourself from cavities by brushing and flossing daily, scheduling regular checkups, and eating a healthy diet.

Is flossing everyday really important?

When you brush, you clean about 80 percent of your teeth and gums. The other 20 percent isn’t taken care of, which can result in issues like decay or bad breath.

Do problems in my mouth affect the rest of my body?

Absolutely. Gum disease can not only damage your oral health, but it can contribute to bigger health concerns. Evidence has been found to connect gum disease with osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, pre-term birth, and increased risk of stroke.

Are checkups really important?

Even if everything seems fine, you need to see the dentist twice a year. These appointments allow your dentist to evaluate your teeth and gums to look for problems that you may not see. Cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer can start with few symptoms, but your dentist will know what to look for.

How can I improve my smile?

Cosmetic dentistry offers patients a variety of options to correct chips and cracks and create a more radiant smile. Teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, and bonding can produce flawless results. Schedule a consultation with a cosmetic dentist to explore your options.

If you have any questions regarding your oral heath, contact Capital Smiledocs Dental. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa.  Family Dentist serving Stittsville, Carp, Barrhaven, Nepean, Ottawa, Kanata and surround areas.

Capital Smiledocs Stittsville Dentistry – Exposing Common Dental Myths

Just as there are misconceptions about medicine, like “You’ll catch a cold if you go outside with wet hair,” some inaccuracies about dentistry also exist. It’s important to separate fact from fiction so that you can protect the healthy and beauty of your smile. Read through the following myths to learn the real truth!

Myth: Only kids get cavities.
Truth: In recent years, the number of school-age children with tooth decay has decreased, but there has been a rise in cavities in older adults. Often, body changes, medications, and decreased mobility can impact your oral health. Your dentist can provide tips to protect your smile at any age.

Myth: I don’t need to worry about my child’s baby teeth.
Truth: Even though primary teeth will eventually fall out, they provide several functions. First, they serve as placeholders for the permanent teeth until they erupt. Also, baby teeth help your child with speech development and chewing.

Myth: Root canals cause pain.
Truth: Actually, the discomfort you feel usually occurs because pain and pressure build up inside the tooth when the pulp, or nerve center, dies. During a root canal, the dentist will remove the diseased tissue, clean out the tooth, and fill the inside to prevent additional problems. Most people feel better after the procedure, and any mild discomfort can be controlled with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Myth: If I chew sugar-free gum, I don’t need to brush and floss.
Truth: While some research indicates that chewing sugar-free gum can help prevent cavity development, it isn’t a substitute for good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing remove plaque and bacteria from areas sugar-free gum can’t help.

Myth: Placing an aspirin next to a tooth will help with a toothache.
Truth: The only way for an aspirin to help is for you to swallow it as directed. Placing the tablet directly next to the tooth can cause an acid burn or irritation

Dental Emergency and Vacation

A dental emergency can occur during your summer vacation!  In preparation for summer vacation, most people change the oil in the car, stock up on sunscreen, and plot the best route to their destinations. With fun activities for the kids and plenty of snacks, many families embark on trips they hope will lead to good times and great memories. Most of the time, little thought is given to dental emergencies. Unfortunately, these situations can crop up and throw a wrench in your well-planned vacation.

Dental emergency while on vacation

Dental emergency while on vacation

The following tips can help you deal with the unexpected dental emergency until you can contact your dentist or find a dental emergency provider near your vacation site:

• Schedule dental visits for your entire family before you leave to decrease the chances of a toothache, loose filling or another dental emergency derailing your plans.
• Plan ahead. Take your dentist’s name, address, and phone number with you as well as your dental plan card in case you need this information when a dental emergency occurs.
• Before you leave, check with your insurance provider to find out what kind of coverage you have for a dental emergency in the area of your trip.
• For a loose band or bracket, use orthodontic wax to cover the area until you can get in touch with your orthodontist.
• If you have a lost crown or filling, buy over-the-counter dental emergency cement and gently put the restoration back in place.
• Any injury to your tongue, cheeks, or lips will easily bleed. Rinse your mouth with warm, salt water and hold gauze on the spot for about 15 minutes to stop the bleeding. If that doesn’t work, call your dentist, or go to the emergency room.

Capital Smiledocs Dental Centre hopes these helpful tips will make your summer vacation a fun and memorable event for your entire family! If you have any questions regarding a dental emergency, contact Capital Smiledocs Dental. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South. Stittsville, Carp, Kanata, Ottawa and surrounding family Dentist.

Cleft Palate Treatment

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

One of the most common birth defects found in infants, a cleft lip or cleft palate malformation occurs when the developing facial structures don’t close properly. In these cases, there is an opening in the upper lift, roof of the mouth, or in both places. Roughly one out of every 700 babies is born with cleft palate issues.

Problems with cleft lips and cleft palates can happen on their own or in relation to other conditions. Although no exact cause has been identified, most doctors believe cleft lip and cleft palates result from genetic factors or exposure to harmful substances, like illegal drugs or certain viruses, in utero. Many times, the exact cause of the cleft problem is never identified.

Because a cleft lip and/or cleft palate can interfere with a child’s ability to eat, speak, and even breathe, parents and doctors must form a treatment plan almost immediately. Surgery on a cleft lip can be performed on babies as young as 10 weeks old. Usually, cleft palate repair happens later, between six and 18 months of age. Follow up treatment and surgeries may occur for many years.

Through out this time, the patient may require special services to address speech, dental, psychological, and other issues. Finding a good dentist to join your child’s time is critical. For example, a child with a cleft lip needs regular checkups, but he or she may also need early evaluation because cleft malformations can generate missing, crooked, or partially formed teeth. As well, an orthodontist can evaluate facial growth and development, particularly the jaw area.

Foods that Can Harm Your Teeth

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

What you eat not only helps your body grow strong, but these choices also impact your oral health. A balanced diet will reduce the risks of cavities and promote gum health.

Knowing which food and beverages to avoid will help you protect your gorgeous smile for a lifetime.

Refined sugar
Because the bacteria in your mouth can easily metabolize simple sugar, options such as sodas, sweet treats, and even carbohydrates like white breads can provide a great food source for these organisms. An increase in the bacteria in your mouth often leads to demineralization of tooth enamel, which makes you susceptible to tooth decay.

Acid foods
Too much wine, fruit juices, or citric fruits like oranges can wear away enamel and weaken teeth. Have a piece of cheese to counteract the effects of the acid.

Hard foods and snacks
Chewing certain candies, nuts, popcorn, and even ice can cause small fractures in your tooth that may eventually lead to more significant damage.

One-sided diets
If you opt for a “pasta only” or “grapefruit” diet, your body will only get limited nutrients. Without the right vitamins and minerals, your health may suffer, which could include trouble with your teeth.

Follow these tips to keep teeth healthy:

• Chew gum with Xylitol
• Choose healthy alternative
• Limit snacks between meals
• Rinse with water after you eat
• Try foods like carrots, celery, and apples, which are naturally abrasive and can help clean teeth

Your Dental Health and Pregnancy

When you are having a baby, you have lots to think about for nine months. Most moms-to-be spend time picking out layettes, creating nurseries and selecting names. Practically every choice you make is centered on the new baby. During this exciting time, you need to take care of your body, which includes thinking about your oral health.

The hormonal changes in a woman’s body can affect the health of teeth and gums.

These tips will help you protect your smile and your unborn baby.

Before You Conceive
Try to schedule a dental checkup to make sure your mouth is in good condition so that the dentist can address any problems. It’s best to handle any major restorative work when you aren’t expecting. The same is true for X-rays. Being proactive with your treatment will ensure optimal dental health once you actually become pregnant.

During Pregnancy
If you need routine care during pregnancy, don’t schedule it during the first trimester or at the end of the third trimester; the second trimester is the optimal time for dental exams. Though you may feel exhausted and overwhelmed, remember to brush and floss frequently. Good home care will prevent issues like gum disease, which can increase the risk of pre-term births.

After You Give Birth
Once the baby arrives, you will probably be consumed with caring for your newborn. Take time to address any problems you developed during pregnancy to keep your smile healthy and strong.

Tooth Whitening at Capital Smiledocs Dental

A survey by the ADA, Crest, and Oral B tells us that a person’s smile is the most appealing feature over eyes, hair, and body. You may recall a similar survey by the AACD  that showed a great smile makes a person seem more intelligent and attractive. So it’s not news, its true.

The easiest way to enhance your smile is to whiten your teeth. This simple procedure can take years of staining off teeth and can immediately increase the youthfulness of many patients!
Here is an article about tooth whitening from the ADA.  It might answer some questions you have about whitening.

What should you ask your dentist?

You may want to start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow-ish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all. Likewise, bleaching may not enhance your smile if you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not effect the color of these materials, and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding.
What is in-office whitening?

If you are a candidate for bleaching, your dentist may suggest a procedure that can be done in his or her office. This procedure is called chairside bleaching and may require more than one office visit. Each visit may take from 30 minutes to one hour.
During chairside bleaching, the dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth, and a special light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. Lasers have been used during tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent.
What are at-home whitening and products?

There are several types of products available for use at home, which can either be dispensed by your dentist or purchased over-the-counter.

Bleaching solutions. These products contain peroxide(s), which actually bleach the tooth enamel. These products typically rely on percent carbamide peroxide as the bleaching agent, carbamide peroxide comes in several different concentrations (10%, 16%, 22%).

Peroxide-containing whiteners typically come in a gel and are placed in a mouthguard. Usage regimens vary. Some products are used for about twice a day for 2 weeks, and others are intended for overnight use for 1-2 weeks. If you obtain the bleaching solution from your dentist, he or she can make a custom-fitted mouthguard for you that will fit your teeth precisely. Currently, only dentist-dispensed home-use 10% carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels carry the ADA Seal.

You also may want to speak with your dentist should any side effects become bothersome. For example, teeth can become sensitive during the period when you are using the bleaching solution. In many cases, this sensitivity is temporary and should lessen once the treatment is finished. Some people also experience soft tissue irritation—either from a tray that doesn’t fit properly or from solution that may come in contact with the tissues. If you have concerns about such side effects, you should discuss them with your dentist.

Toothpastes. All toothpastes help remove surface stain through the action of mild abrasives. “Whitening” toothpastes in the ADA Seal of Acceptance program have special chemical or polishing agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Unlike bleaches, these ADA Accepted products do not alter the intrinsic color of teeth.

Cosmetic Dentist for Porcelain Veneers by Capital Smiledocs Dental

When we talk about “smile design”, what are we talking about.  There are many aspects of a smile beside teeth.   There are so many variables as to what creates a beautiful smile.  What is beautiful to one person, may not be to another; which is a good thing, or we would all look alike.  For instance, in parts of Africa and South America, it is considered beautiful to file the front teeth into points.  So the “cosmetic dentist” of the tribe, or witch doctor, help to file the teeth using knives, files, and rocks to chip and shape the teeth.

Of course we don’t resort to those measures, but there is some reshaping done to achieve the looks that we desire.  Using “smile guides” we can choose over 30,000 different ways that a cosmetic dentist can create a new smile.  One of the most popular guides is one developed by Dr. William Dickerson, the founder of the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.  I have had the privilage of studing there for the past seven years under his tutelage.  I have designed thousands of smiles using veneers and porcelain crowns to acheive the look we wanted.  Each smile style is a combination of the teeth shapes for the front six teeth.  For example, the four front teeth (incisors) could be either square at the corners, square at one corner and rounded at the other, or rounded at both corners. Similarly, the cuspids or eye teeth (third tooth back) could be pointed, rounded or flat. Combining these different shapes each produces a uniquely different smile style. Please note, this smile library below is only to choose the basic shape of the front six teeth, and in no way reflect the color, length, surface texture or translucency that the porcelain veneers or crowns will have. Those other things are addressed in other aspects of smile design and choosing the best combination for your “sensational new smile”.

For most females, the “Enhanced” smile style is one of our most popular designs. Note that the second teeth from the center are a little shorter than the front teeth. This is a youthful effect we call “the gull wing” that really looks nice on females. The “Hollywood” style above is a little more “toothy” and works well for males and especially those wanting to show off a little more teeth. The “Oval” style might look best on someone with a very round face. Notice how very round the edges of the four front teeth are? The “Aggressive” style has tooth edges that are flat almost straight across. We use it mostly for men and it simulates someone who might be a bit older and have a habit of grinding his teeth. The “Youthful” style simulates the shape of unworn teeth that might be seen in a 14 year old. Although many adults like this name because they think it might give them the illusion of being significantly younger, we almost always utilize this design in much younger individuals. The “Mature” style has squarish edges on the four front teeth and is another design that we frequently use for men. The “Softened” style is a very popular design that we use for those wanting their smile to help make them appear a little younger than their years. It is my preference to use smile designs that have the cuspids (also called canines, the third teeth back on each side) that are slightly round, not flat (too old looking) or pointed (too aggressive looking). It is important that both the patient and cosmetic dentist actively discuss the different smile styles at the beginning of the smile makeover process. Using our technique called “the trial smile” we’re able to make provisional veneers or crowns so that our patient can “test drive” their new smile prior to making any final decision regarding the smile design for their final porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.

The Dos and Don’ts of Proper Home Care

If you want to enjoy your stunning smile for life, you have to protect it. Eating right and regular checkups will help with this endeavor. Another important component is your daily home routine. Effective brushing and flossing are key to protecting your smile long-term.

The following dos and don’ts will help you make the most of your home care routine:

• Do select the right equipment. Make sure you use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
• Do practice an effective technique. Hold your brush at a slight angle and brush with short back-and-forth motions.
• Do remember to change your toothbrush. Germs can grow on the brush head, so replace your toothbrush or electronic head every three to four months.
• Do choose a toothbrush you like. Manual versus electronic doesn’t matter. The important thing is to find one you will put to good use.
• Do work with enough floss. Tear off at least 18 inches so you can get between teeth.
• Do take your time. Spend at least two minutes brushing so that you cover the whole area.
• Do limit toothpick use. The instruments can poke or injure gums.
• Don’t cover your toothbrush after use. Leave the brush in an upright position and let it dry completely.
• Don’t forget to floss daily. Brushing alone won’t remove plaque and debris from tight spaces between teeth.
• Don’t pick a mouthwash with alcohol. These products can dry your mouth, limit saliva production, and make you prone to issues like gum disease or tooth decay. Ask your dentist an antimicrobial mouth rinse to help reduce plaque between your teeth.

Solutions for Common Dental Problems

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

Because many people don’t enjoy dental visits, they put them off, which can make oral health issues worse. Modern dentistry enables dentists to correct problems and transform any smile. With the sedation options available, you can rest comfortably while your dentist gives you a healthy, vibrant smile.
Discolored or stained teeth
Brushing alone may not remove discolorations cause by tea, coffee, tobacco, or even age. Professional teeth whitening can penetrate stains and lighten teeth up to 10 shades. You can choose from in-office or take-home kits.

Chips and gaps between teeth
With minor cosmetic issues like jagged teeth or space between front teeth, cosmetic bonding can produce beautiful results. In just minutes, your dentist can mask small imperfections with composite resin materials and a curing light.

Mild tooth decay
When you develop cavities, your dentist will remove the damaged tissue and restore the area with a filling. Most dentists currently place all-white fillings because they require less removal of healthy tissue and they won’t compromise your gorgeous image.

Cracked or fractured teeth
For teeth that have sustained extensive damage, you will probably need a dental crown. Also called a cap, a dental crown covers the remaining tooth structure above the gum line, re-establishing the strength and stability of the injured tooth.

Missing teeth
If you have lost teeth due to trauma or disease, your dentist may suggest dental implants. Designed to create an artificial tooth root and crown, a dental implant looks and functions like your original dentition. Dentures and partial dentures are also available to give you a complete smile.

Predict Your Future Health with a Tape Measure

Research shows that in some cases, all you need is a tape measure to predict if you’re at risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia or even a stroke! Here are some clues to look for, according to Prevention magazine.

    • Keep track of your jean size. A study found that adults whose waistline increases dramatically between their 30s and 40s are more than three times as likely to develop dementia, compared to adults who maintain the same size. Why? The visceral fat packed around your organs is dangerous and known to secrete hormones associated with cognitive decline! The fix? Manage your portions, and replace unhealthy fat – from foods like cookies, burgers and ribs – with “healthy fat” – from foods like olives, avocadoes, nuts, and dark chocolate. Research shows those will help prevent the build-up of visceral fat. If you can’t fit into a 10-year-old pair of jeans, you need to slim down.
    • Measure your calves. Research shows that people with calves measuring 13 inches around or less have a high risk for stroke! That’s because plaque in the blood can settle in your legs, and if there isn’t enough fatty tissue in your calves to draw that plaque from your blood, you’ll be more likely to develop blood clots, which can spread to your brain. The fix? Sip more green tea. A Japanese study found that people who drank five cups of green tea each day had the lowest risk of dying from a stroke. Also, stay active. Sedentary people have the biggest risk of blood clots.
    • Measure your arm-span. That’s the length of your arms from fingertip to fingertip. A recent Tufts University study found that people with an arm span measuring less than 60 inches are one-and-a-half times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. The theory here is that a smaller arm span is a sign of nutritional deficits during childhood, which can affect brain development. The good news is that you can ward off mental decline by keeping your brain as active as possible. Studies have shown that adults who spend the most time challenging their brain are nearly three times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a series of clear, removable teeth aligners that dentists use as an alternative to the traditional metal braces. In the majority of orthodontic cases, Invisalign is the treatment of choice due to the comfort, user-friendly advantages, and cosmetic appearance. We are proud to offer all of our patients the best technology and care in our Capital Smiledocs Invisalign dental office.

What are the Advantages?

§         The greatest advantage of the treatment is the cosmetic appearance. The aligners are completely transparent and made of clear, hard plastic. This makes the method particularly popular among adults who want to straighten their teeth without the look of traditional metal braces. Invisalign for Teens has also been created to help teens straighten their teeth without their peers ever even knowing!

§         In addition to the benefits of invisibility, our patients have found the aligners more comfortable and user-friendly than metal braces. There are no metal brackets to cut your lips or cheeks and the aligners do not irritate gums. Due to the fact that the aligners can be removed and cleaned, unlike metal braces which routinely catch food and gum in the brackets.

§         The hygienic benefits are excellent and the chance of tooth decay is much lower in comparison to traditional braces. The aligners must be worn for 20 hours a day, allowing time to remove them while eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth. With traditional braces, demineralization or tooth decay occurs in 50% of patients. The metal wires also prevent dental x-rays from being taken and tooth decay is usually not caught or noticed until after the braces are removed. The Invisalign aligners are removed while eating and patients are told to brush and floss their teeth before returning the aligners to their mouth.

§         Computerized treatment planning is an excellent way of checking the proper alignment of the teeth and customizing the finished product to the patient’s unique desires. The patient is brought into the office to review, critique, and agree to the treatment as it is shown online to the Dentist.

§         Due to the advanced nature of Invisalign technology, the orthodontic treatment is typically quicker than traditional braces. The average length of time a patient is in treatment is 12 months. The final aligner is kept as a final retainer which the patient can keep for the rest of their life and wear at night to help prevent the teeth from shifting after treatment.

§         The aligners can be used as bleach trays to whiten teeth. The custom aligners are very similar to bleach trays and can double as bleach trays to prevent an added cost. We offer all of our Invisalign patients teeth whitening products so that they have perfectly white teeth at the end of their treatment!

Are there any disadvantages?

§         Because the aligners are removable, they do have the potential to get lost. The good news is that Invisalign stores all treatments in their database and we are able to request a single tray be remade to replace the lost aligner.

§         Another potential disadvantage is that the trays MUST be worn no less than 20 hours per day. If a patient is not consistent with their wear, the trays will not have their intended effect and the patient will struggle to achieve their optimal smile.

§         If a patient suffers from grinding their teeth, the aligners have the potential to become damaged before their 2-week use is up.  If a person has severe grinding habits, other options will need to be discussed before attempting the use of Invisalign treatment.

If you want to know more about Invisalign, contact us today or to schedule your consultation appointment. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South.

Dental Veneers: The Procedure at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Dental veneer dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Dental veneer dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental

1st Step: Every patient must have an exam and discuss their cosmetic preferences with one of the Dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental. The oral health of the patient and any malocclusion (crowding and incorrect bite) must be addressed before veneers will be recommended. An impression is taken of the upper and lower teeth and the lab will fabricate a wax model of the future veneers. The patient will be able to choose the style of veneer desired from our photo examples.

How many Dental Veneers do I need?

Many patients are interested in placing a veneer on one or two teeth to improve their appearance. While this can be done, we highly recommend placing veneers on each tooth seen when you smile. Some people have smaller mouths and may only have 4 or 6 teeth visible when smiling or talking. Others may have a “Julia Roberts” smile and need 6 to 10 veneers made. We use the best labs in Ottawa, Ontario and we make our veneers as natural looking as the patient desires.

2nd Step: The patient will return to review and revise the wax model of the veneers.  This is absolutely necessary to review with the patient because it provides a physical, visual example of the final result.  Wax-ups, as they are called, provide the patient with a chance to review and change any part of the veneer that they don’t like. The size, shape, length, texture, or color will all be considered and the patient will be able to make educated decisions for their permanent veneers.

3rd Step: Once the look of the veneers is chosen, the patient will return for the veneer preparation visit. The Dentist will slightly reduce the chosen teeth and take the final impression for the lab. Temporary veneers are made in the office to replicate the permanent veneers. The patient will wear these for a few days while the lab creates the permanent veneers.

Note: Some patients may require Laser Gum Recontouring.  When preparing for veneers, the gumline can be moved or re-shaped to prevent a “gummy smile” and the veneers will be made to sit perfectly along the gumline. We use a very gentle laser that promotes quick healing and little to no discomfort.

4th Step: The temporary veneers are gently removed, the tooth is cleaned from any cement, and the Permanent Veneers are placed on the teeth with permanent cement. Any slight or small adjustments will be made by the dentist to ensure correct bite and esthetics of the teeth.

We welcome you to visit our office, meet our Dentist and Team members, and enjoy all the amenities that Capital Smiledocs Dental has. Our consultations allow patients to discuss all treatment options with the Dentist and help us understand your unique desires. Feel free to check out our website for before and after photos and more information. We look forward to meeting you!

Stittsville and Ottawa Dental Implants

Dental Implants are one of today’s leading options for replacing missing teeth.  Thousands of patients enjoy the comfort and ease of having dental implants.  There is an average success rate of 95% for those who have dental implants.  If you are missing any teeth, dental implants are low-maintenance and are the most similar to natural teeth.  Their similarity to natural teeth offer no change in oral hygiene habits, no change in speech, and the ability to eat normal foods.  For all those who wonder if they are good candidates for dental implants, call Capital Smiledocs Dental for an appointment.  The following are a few things the Dentist will consider before recommending a dental implant.

Strength and Density of Bone

For a dental implant to successfully work, the bone has to be thick and strong enough to support the implant.  After a tooth is extracted, some patients will experience bone loss in that area. Others may have genetic or health conditions that interfere with the regeneration of bone.  Should this be the case, a bone graft can be done to fill the extraction site and can aid the bone regeneration.  For those whose bone is naturally thin, a sinus lift can be done by an oral surgeon to increase the thickness of the Maxillary bone.

Health of the Teeth and Gums

The tissues and teeth need to be free of decay and bacteria in order for the implant to heal correctly.  The implant will have a greater chance of failing if there is constant exposure to bacteria while the bone and gums are trying to heal and grow.  For this reason, it is recommended that all tooth decay and/or gum disease be addressed before a dental implant is considered to replace a missing tooth.  If there is dental decay, dental fillings or crowns can be done to remove and replace it. To prevent gum disease, patients are to have regular cleanings with the hygienist. For those who already have gum disease it recommended to have special deep cleanings 3-4 times per year to prevent it from getting worse.

Oral Health and Smoking Habits

The oral health and habits will be addressed before placing a dental implant.  Patients with poor oral hygiene and those who are heavy smokers are asked to change their habits.  The risk of dental implant failure increases significantly in smokers and patients must typically stop smoking before a dental implant is considered.  Correct home care of teeth and gums is vital to a healthy mouth and provides an optimal environment for dental implants to successfully replace missing teeth.

Protecting the Implant and Bruxism

The functional use and force placed on the implant must be taken into consideration before placing an implant.  Just like any other object, dental implants and the dental crowns placed on them will experience wear and tear from normal, daily use.  The force and pressure placed on the implant from chewing, speaking, clenching, or grinding (also known as bruxism) must be carefully examined.  If these forces are too much for the implant or surrounding bone to tolerate, the likelihood of failure will increase significantly.  Correct positioning, straight tooth alignment, correct crown size, and the changing of grinding habits will aid in the success of the dental implant.  If bruxism cannot be stopped, a custom-made night guard can help protect the crown and dental implant.

Other Health Conditions

Certain health conditions, such as Type II diabetes, can  increase the failure rate of dental implants.  For those with this health condition, it is common to have low amounts and height of bone in which to place an implant.  Type II Diabetes can also contribute to poor blood circulation which may interfere with the healing of bone and gum tissues.  Poor blood circulation can also increase the chance of infection once the implant is placed.

Dental Implants have a typical estimated success rate of 95% when all of the above conditions are correctly considered and solved.  With all we know today about the human body and dental implants, there remain about 5% of people whose implants fail for unknown reasons.  The dental implants are made from titanium, which has been proven as a material that the body typically will not reject as a “foreign material.”  With this knowledge and all of our sound technology, the success rate is far greater than the possible failure rate. Thousands of people have implants are placed every year and enjoy the excellent tooth replacements.

For all those interested in dental implants, we welcome you to call Capital Smiledocs Dental. We look forward to meeting you and answering any questions you may have!

Dental Veneers at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Dental Veneers are custom-made porcelain or composite resin “shells” placed on the front surface of a tooth.  Veneers are bonded to the tooth and are intended to improve the cosmetic appearance or esthetics of the tooth.  Veneers can be made to increase the length or size of the tooth, change the shape of the tooth, or to change the color of the tooth.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers can be made from dental porcelain in a dental laboratory or from composite resin placed by the dentist directly onto the tooth.  Porcelain veneers have greater strength and typically last longer without wear or need for replacement.  Porcelain has been proven to resist stains better and replicates the appearance and texture properties of natural teeth.

Composite Resin Veneers

The dentist can place composite Resin Veneers directly onto the tooth.  Depending on the reason for the dental veneer, resin veneers can be made thinner than porcelain veneers.  While this may provide less tooth removal, the resin can be prone to chipping or wear due to the thin nature of the veneer and may require frequent replacement.

Why Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are a long-term solution for teeth with an array of functional or cosmetic problems.

1)     Teeth that are discolored from the interior of the tooth.  This is not a common occurrence, but teeth may discolor after a Root Canal is completed or if the tooth suffers trauma and turns a brown or gray.

2)     Discolored teeth due to excessive fluoride or use of the drug called tetracycline.  Use of these two drugs can interfere with the formation and color of the enamel on permanent teeth at a young age.

3)     Teeth that are chipped, worn down, or broken. Veneers restore teeth to their normal shape and size and can fix the appearance of a chipped tooth.

4)     Teeth that are misaligned, uneven, crooked, or have large spaces in between them. For many people with crooked or misaligned teeth, the combination of braces and veneers is the optimal option, both functionally and cosmetically.  Veneers can correct the appearance of misaligned teeth, but cannot fix the incorrect bite of the premolars and molars.  Invisalign braces allow the patient to bite correctly, make space for the veneers, and allow for the best long-term oral health of the patient.

The cosmetic dentists at Capital Smiledocs Dental  loves to perform cosmetic dentistry and welcomes you to experience our gentle dentistry.  Please check out our website for more information and call our Capital Smiledocs Dental Office for an appointment today. Bad Breath Treatment.  Five Foods That Fight Bad Breath!

Bad breath treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental Centre in Stittsville and Ottawa

Bad breath treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental Centre in Stittsville and Ottawa

Bad breath results from two key issues: oral hygiene and gastrointestinal health. Basically this means that breath odors originate not just inside the mouth but also from your digestive tract. The culprit in both cases is largely bacteria. Doctors will tell you that if you have bad breath, you should first make sure you are eating right (getting a balanced diet of protein, carbs, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of fluids to keep the GI tract healthy) and brushing and flossing after every meal. But that still doesn’t mean you might not be offending your friends and co-workers after lunch at the new Italian place.

Here are some things you can ingest (or chew) that can help.

Bad breath treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental Centre in Stittsville and Ottawa

1. Chew on this. Move over parsley, there are some new halitosis-fighting herbs in town. “Coriander, spearmint, tarragon, eucalyptus, rosemary and cardamom are all good for fighting bad breath,” says Dr. Christine Gerbstadt, who has lectured on oral health. You can chew on fresh herbs or make tonics by steeping them in hot water (as a tea). These herbs make an excellent digestive as well-doubling the benefits of ending a meal this way.

2. Get some active culture. No, not Cirque du Soleil, but yogurt. A recent study found that a serving of yogurt each day reduces the level of odor-causing hydrogen sulfide in the mouth. Apparently it also cuts back on bacteria in the mouth. In fact plaque and gum disease were reduced in the study’s yogurt eaters as well. Plus, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends getting enough vitamin D from yogurt, cheese and milk if you’re worried about halitosis because this vitamin creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria growth. Be sure to get the kind of yogurt with active cultures-not overly processed or sugar-added varieties.

3. Crunchy types. Apples, carrots, celery-basically any fiber-rich fruit or vegetable is your friend when it comes to fighting halitosis. “Inside your mouth, plaque build-up causes odors,” explains Cynthia Sass, ADA spokeswoman and registered dietician. “Eating foods that increase saliva production keep the mouth moist-and rinsed out. Also, many carbs and proteins can get stuck in your teeth-even healthy foods like whole grain cereal or chicken breast.” So follow a meal with a Granny Smith (feel the saliva kick in at the mention of it?) to cleanse the mouth.

4. Masking techniques. Sugarless gum shouldn’t replace brushing your teeth after a meal, but in a pinch it can freshen breath (masking odors) and is another way to increase saliva production to rinse away plaque and bacteria. Mints can mask as well, but only briefly-and go for sugarless. Sugar creates plaque, and no one wants a mint that makes breath worse.

5. High C’s. Eating berries, citrus fruits, melons and other vitamin C-rich foods create an inhospitable environment for bacteria growth. A diet rich in vitamin C is also is important for preventing gum disease and gingivitis-both major causes of halitosis. Get your C in foods, not supplements, which can cause gastrointestinal upset in some, according to Sass, and exacerbate bad breath.

TMJ HEADACHES

About 45 million Americans suffer from headaches each year making it the most common medical complaint. Patients seeking to discover the reason for the headaches or a way of stopping them often face frustrating rounds of visits to various specialists without finding relief. One common cause of headaches that many people don’t know about is a problem with the tempomandibular joint, your jaw joint.

headache

headache

Migraines or frequent, continual headaches may be a sign of temporomandibular joint dysfunction or TMJ. The temporomandibular joint (jaw joint) is one of the most complex in the human body. Common causes of TMJ pain include accidents, bruxism (grinding teeth at night) or a bad bite (malocclusion).

Malocclusion can occur for many reasons. Teeth may not fit together properly because of old, broken dental work, misaligned teeth or missing teeth. A dentist who has specialized training in the field of neuromuscular dentistry has the ability to correct the improper bite and relieve stress on the temporomandibular joint, allowing the muscles surrounding the joint to relax. This relieves the recurring headaches and the neck and shoulder pain that often accompany them.

If you suffer from frequent, recurring headaches, call us to book an appointment. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa.

TMJ Disorder Treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental

TMJ disorder treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa

TMJ disorder treatment at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa

What is TMJ/ TMD?

TMJ, or Tempromandibular Joint Disorder, is a misalignment of the jaw joint.  The Tempromandibular Joint is just in front of the ear and can be felt when  opening and closing the mouth.   Some with this disorder will feel clicking or popping of the jaw if the joint is incorrectly aligned.  TMJ disorder is generally a chronic, degenerative disorder  that will progressively increase over a period of time.

What causes TMJ/TMD?

In most cases, TMJ disorder stems from malocclusion of the teeth.  Malocclusion means that your upper and lower teeth don’t correctly close together and are misaligned.  Malocclusion can occur from accidents or other trauma, incorrect orthodontics, poor restorative dentistry, or simply how the teeth erupted in the mouth as a child.  When the teeth are misaligned, it causes a person to adjust their bite in order to chew and swallow.  This abnormal adjustment causes the muscles to be strained and can result in pain throughout the face, head, arms, shoulders, and back.  Many patients are not aware of the causes of these pains, especially if orthodontics (braces) has given them straight, beautiful teeth.  A slight to severe misalignment of the teeth can slowly cause excess wear and damage to the TMJ joint.

What are the Symptoms?

TMJ disorder causes pain of the hard and soft tissues, such as the muscles and nerves in the face.  The strain placed on these tissues can range from mild to severe and can cause anything from infrequent pain to constant, unrelenting pain.  Some people have headaches, jaw aches, neck and shoulder pain, popping or locking of the jaw joint, or ringing of the ears.  Most people who experience these symptoms will regularly dismiss it as an ear infection or stress.  Most will go undiagnosed for years until the symptoms begin to occur more frequently or the pain becomes greater.  If you experience frequent symptoms, it is important to ask your Dentist to check the alignment of your teeth.  The sooner the misalignment is diagnosed and corrected, the less damage will be done to the Tempromandibular Joint.

How is TMD corrected?

There are some dentists who recommend a full mouth reconstruction for those with the finances and time.  This involves placing crowns and new filings on nearly all the teeth.  For those who do not want to reduce or disturb perfectly good teeth, the BEST OPTION is Neuromuscular Therapy in conjunction with an Oral Appliance.

The Best Treatment

At your first appointment, the Dentist will use soft Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) stimulation and gentle massage to find the most relaxed position for your jaw to be in. Once the correct muscle alignment is found, an impression is taken for the oral appliance, also known as an Oral Orthodic Appliance.

Your second appointment will consist of TENS  and the fitting of the new oral appliance. This appliance will correct TMJ disorder by providing the correct bite which will result in relaxed muscles and a decrese in symptoms.

For the first several weeks you will be instructed to return to the office for occasional adjustments and TENS. This will aid your jaw muscles to slowly adjust and relax into the new position the appliance is creating.

Generally our patients feel an immediate relief from pain and TMD symptoms. The realignment of the bite restores the teeth, jaw, joints, muscles, and nerves to their optimal position and the pain disappears! Our goal is to provide you with life-long relief without prescribing invasive oral surgery.

If you want to know how TMJ Disorders treatment can improve the quality of your life, contact us today or to just schedule your free consultation appointment. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South.

Protect Your Athlete with a Mouth Guard

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

If your kids are involved with sports, either through school or local leagues, you should consider purchasing a mouth guard. These plastic appliances protect their mouths, teeth, lips, and gums from injury.

Conservative estimates suggest that 13 to 19 percent of all dental injuries involve sports. Wearing a mouth guard can lessen the severity of any trauma sustained. Generally, dentists and orthodontists recommend mouth guards for any potential contact activities such as soccer, football, basketball, and even skateboarding or horseback riding. Usually, mouth guards cover the upper teeth.

Several types of mouth guards are available:

Stock mouth guards
Pre-formed and ready to wear, stock mouth guards can be purchased at sporting goods stores or other retailers. While inexpensive, you cannot alter their fit, so these mouth guards provide little or no protection. Talking and breathing can also be difficult.

Boil and bite mouth guards
Offering more coverage than stock mouth guards, boil and bite appliances are constructed from thermoplastic material. You place the device in hot water to soften it and shape it around the teeth for a better fit.

Custom mouth guards
Individually designed, custom mouth guards are more expensive than the other options, but they offer the best coverage, protection and comfort. For a custom appliance, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and send it to a dental lab, where skilled technicians will generate your personal mouth guard.  These custom professional mouth guards fit better, are more retentive, stable and provide the greatest protection against sports injuries.

Protect Yourself from Oral Cancer

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

Did you know that every hour of every day someone dies from oral cancer? Because oral cancer is often found in the advanced stages, this disease has a low survival rate. Approximately 400,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with oral cancer, and only about half will still be alive in five years. Understanding basic facts and debunking common myths can help you preserve your oral health and protect your life.

Myth: Only people with known risk factors get oral cancer.
Although lifestyle choices, age, and gender can increase your chances of developing oral cancer, about 25 percent of oral cancer patients have no identifiable risks.

Fact: Early detection can save your life.
When patients are diagnosed before oral cancer advances, the cure rate is 90 percent. Often, people don’t notice the symptoms, so the disease progresses. Unfortunately, oral cancer can have disfiguring effects on patients as well as compromise their quality of life as they fight oral cancer.

Myth: Dental checkups are not important for detecting oral cancer.
Because the initial signs of oral cancer can be mild, like a lesion that doesn’t heal or a sore throat, you may not recognize a problem. Your dentist will examine your whole mouth and look for anything unusual. If necessary, the doctor may recommend further testing to rule out oral cancer.

Fact: Smoking and alcohol consumption substantially impact oral cancer risks.
In combination with heavy alcohol consumption, more than 30 drinks a week, smoking is increases the odds of developing oral cancer by 75 percent. If you smoke more than one pack a day, you have 24 times the risk for oral cancer.

Getting Your Kids to Floss

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

Although many parents encourage their children to brush their teeth frequently, flossing often gets overlooked. Unfortunately, brushing alone doesn’t keep plaque and bacteria from building up between teeth. If left on teeth, plaque hardens into tartar, which increases the odds of developing problems like tooth decay or gum disease. For optimal oral health, your kids need to make flossing once a day part of their routine.

The following tips will help you communicate an effective message to your kids:

Make it fun

If you create a positive environment, your kids will look forward to flossing instead of dreading it. Let them pick out cool colors or good smelling floss so that they feel excited about the experience. Do an online search for puzzles and games that you can print out for your kids; these resources will reinforce the importance of home hygiene.

Practice makes perfect

Build flossing into your nightly rituals. Use this opportunity for one-on-one bonding, and your children will be excited to get started because of the quality time with you.

Offer your help

With kids under eight, you will need to do most of the work. As you floss your child’s teeth, explain what you are doing and why it matters so that they will know how to take over at the right age.

Lead by example

The best way to teach your kids about the importance of flossing is to have them see you making the time for your dental health. When they see that flossing is part of your to-do list, they will follow suit.

Dental Hygiene Q and A

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas

You only get one smile, so it’s important to protect its vitality. A good home regiment and regular checkups will help keep teeth and gums healthy. Understanding what causes dental problems will allow you to make the best choices for your smile.

The following questions and answers provide valuable information about maximizing your oral care.

Why do people lose teeth?

The most frequent reasons for tooth loss are cavities and gum, or periodontal, disease. Usually, cavities contribute to tooth loss in kids, while gum disease is the number one factor for adult tooth loss.

Do I really have to floss?

The common answer among dentists is that you only have to floss the teeth you want to keep. Brushing alone won’t get between teeth. When you don’t floss, bacteria and food can irritate gum tissue and lead to gum disease if not addressed.

Can I do anything to prevent plaque?

Not only do you need to brush and floss regularly, but you should ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride applications. Often thought to be only necessary for younger patients, sealants and fluoride offer extra protection for your oral health.

What kind of toothpaste should I use?

Whether you prefer whitening options or toothpaste for sensitive teeth, it really doesn’t really matter. Choose a toothpaste that contains fluoride, and carefully brush for about 3 minutes, or the length of a song.

Is it better to use a manual or electronic toothbrush?

In reality, the most important thing about your toothbrush is that you use it correctly at least twice a day. Research shows that both manual and electric toothbrushes will remove plaque and bacteria.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Stittsville dentist serving Ottawa, Kanata, Carp, Nepean and surrounding areas.

Thanks to fluoridated water and better education, cavities in school-age children have actually declined. In adults, however, the incidence of tooth decay has risen. Understanding the cause of cavities and what you can do to protect your teeth will help keep your smile healthy for life.

What is tooth decay?
Caused by plaque and bacteria in your mouth, tooth decay destroys tooth enamel. When you consume sugary or starchy foods, these items provide a fertile breeding ground for cavity-causing bacteria. The acid produced by these bacteria eventually wears away the enamel and creates cavities.

Aren’t cavities mainly a problem for kids?
Though people tend to believe tooth decay impacts only children, adults over 50 often deal with this issue too. Changes in the mouth, certain medications, and problems like gum disease can make older adults more susceptible to cavities.

Do cavities in baby teeth really matter?
Yes. Not only do your child’s primary teeth serve as placeholders for permanent teeth, but they also help with speech development and chewing function. Care for your toddler’s teeth as you would permanent teeth, brushing and flossing frequently; however, don’t use fluoride toothpaste on children under two.

How do I prevent decay?
Follow these tips to help protect your teeth:
• Brush with a fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Eat a balanced diet
• Floss or use an interdental cleaner every day
• Limit snacks and choose healthy options
• Schedule routine cleanings and exams
• Talk with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride and/or dental sealants

If you have any questions regarding dental decay, hygiene or oral health, contact Capital Smiledocs Dental. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South.

Cancer Warning Signs

Stittsville and Ottawa Family Dentist

Stittsville and Ottawa Family Dentist

An estimated 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and the chances for survival will depend on how quickly it’s detected. So, here are some symptoms YOU should never ignore, because if they do indicate cancer, getting to the doctor ASAP could mean the difference between life and death.

Red flag #1: Difficulty swallowing. When you swallow, you’ve probably had the uncomfortable experience of food getting “stuck” either in your esophagus or chest. Well, if you have this sensation all the time, or most times when you eat, and it’s usually NOT painful – get checked out. Dr. Amy P. Abernathy is a professor of medicine in the oncology division at Duke University Medical Center. She says that difficulty swallowing is common in people with esophageal or stomach cancer, and may be a sign that a tumor is obstructing the esophagus, or that inflammation has narrowed the opening. Inflammation can be a precursor to cancer, and can also indicate that a malignant tumor has irritated surrounding healthy tissue. So, if eating becomes difficult for any reason, see a doctor.

Next red flag: Extreme exhaustion. Everyone gets tired, but Abernathy says that extreme fatigue due to cancer is different. If for no apparent reason you feel overwhelmingly exhausted, it could be due to anemia caused by colon cancer or leukemia. Unfortunately, fatigue due to cancer is sometimes mistaken for depression, but a key difference is that people with depression often lack the will and desire to perform daily activities. A person with cancer-related fatigue wants to stay active, but is physically unable to.

One last symptom you should never ignore: Persistent cough. Long-time smokers get used to coughing, so they don’t often notice this important symptom of lung cancer, but non-smokers can also have persistent cough, which can be a symptom of throat cancer. Abernathy says if you have a cough that persists longer than a month, get to a doctor, especially if there’s any blood involved.

Scheduling Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Although most parents record big milestones like first steps or first words, few people acknowledge the importance of the first dental visit. Ideally, your child should have an initial visit by age one with a children dentist. Around three, you should begin to schedule regular appointments.

Children Dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Children Dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental

Why does my child need to see the dentist at such a young age?

Once teeth being to erupt, you should have a children dentist check out your child’s mouth. Dental problems can start early, so the sooner the appointment, the better. Your child’s teeth are smaller than adult teeth and it doesn’t take long for a cavity to reach the pulp in the middle of the teeth where the nerves and blood vessels are.  Once decay infects the pulp your child will develop severe pain and is at risk of developing a dental abscess.  If not treated right away, the dental abscess can start to travel in the blood circulation and travel spread else where in your child’s body.

During your child’s visit, your children dentist can also examine for other common problemsand  provide recommendations about common issues like thumb sucking, pacifier use, and baby bottle decay.

How do I prepare for the first visit?

When you schedule the appointment with a children dentist, ask the dental office for details about the process so you won’t be surprised. Gently explain to your child about what to expect when they go to the children dentist. Have a plan in place so that you are prepared whether your child has a positive or negative reaction to the visit.

What happens at this appointment?

Often, this first experience is just an opportunity to introduce your child to the children dentist and office. If the child cooperates, the visit may include an examination of the whole mouth, a gentle cleaning, and X-rays.

Say Goodbye to Heatstroke and Other Summer Problems

Stittsville and Ottawa Family Dentist

Stittsville and Ottawa Family Dentist

Winter is finally over and summer is here! It’s time for the beach, BBQ, gardening and spending time outdoors.  Here are some common heat-related problems and survival tips, from the experts at Web MD:

  • Food-borne illnesses. The problem is more common in hot weather because it’s easier for the bacteria that cause disease to multiply. So how can you prevent it? By following 4 basic food prep rules: cook, clean, chill, and separate. Use a thermometer so you know your food is properly cooked, wash your hands with soap and water, use a cooler when you’re outside and keep utensils and dishes that you use for meat separate. The warning signs of food poisoning are vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. If you come down with these – get to the hospital.
  • Dehydration and heatstroke. What happens is that you sweat and replace your lost electrolyte-packed body fluids with only water, so your body gets dehydrated. Then heatstroke can set in if your body temperature rises enough. So if you’re outside and sweating, you should be drinking a 50-50 mix of water and Gatorade, which has potassium. Drink a small bottle every hour. And watch for symptoms of dehydration, which vary from thirst to fatigue to headaches and nausea. If it’s heatstroke, you may be delirious or even have hallucinations. In that case, you need to get to the emergency room immediately so you can have intravenous fluids.
  • Swimmer’s ear. When you stay in the water too long, your ears shrivel up the same way your fingers get pruney. And water gets trapped in your ear canal, which then gets inflamed and infected, causing swimmer’s ear. Symptoms include ear pain and a decrease in hearing, and you can also get a fever or swollen lymph nodes. If you get it, you’ll need to see your doctor for a prescription. And to prevent it from now on – wear wax ear plugs in the water.

When you look your best, you feel better about yourself. One way to improve your appearance is to achieve a bright, radiant smile. You can lighten stains and whiten your smile through a variety of choices including tooth whitening.

Consider the following tips to boost your confidence and enjoy lasting brilliance:

Make daily care a priority

Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly will help remove food debris and surface stains. If you brush right after you eat, you will have even better results.

See the dentist regularly

During your twice yearly checkups, the hygienist will clean and polish your teeth, which will restore some brightness to your smile.

Stay away from dark beverages

Cranberry juice, grape juice, and red wine might taste great, but they can discolor teeth. To be safe, rinse your mouth after you finish your drink. Watch out for coffee and tea as well.

Kick the nicotine habit

Smoking is a top contributor to teeth stains. Tobacco produces brown stains that infiltrate the grooves and pits of tooth enamel, making these discolorations hard to remove.

Try home remedies

Baking soda, strawberries, and crunchy foods can all help turn up the wattage on your smile.

Choose different toothpaste

Certain toothpastes have mild abrasives or polishing agents that erase superficial stains. Because they don’t contain bleach, these products won’t alter tooth color.

Your dentist attended school for years to become an expert in dental treatments and procedures.  It can help you feel more comfortable, however, if you develop knowledge of basic dental terminology. Plus, you can impress all your friends by explaining the difference between a composite (all-white) and amalgam (metal) filling :)

Common Dental Terms

Bruxism – This term refers to the condition of grinding your teeth, especially at night.

Anterior Teeth – Located in the front of your mouth, you have 12 anterior teeth, six on the top and six on the bottom.

Crowns vs. Fillings – Any dental restoration that covers the entire surface of the tooth above the gum line is called a crown. Usually, you need a crown when a tooth sustains extensive damage and a routine filling won’t work. Fillings restore smaller portions of a tooth surface.

Molars – The teeth used for grinding. Adults have 12 molars.

Occlusion – When a dentist use the word occlusion, he or she is referring to how the upper and lower teeth fit together upon closure.

Periodontal Disease – Another term for gum disease, periodontal disease affects roughly 80 percent of adults in this country. Generally mild and often unnoticed at first, gum disease can result in pain, bone degeneration, and tooth loss if left untreated.

Plaque vs. Tartar – A colorless, sticky substance, plaque accumulates on teeth and promotes the growth of bacteria in the mouth. When food debris gathers and hardens on your teeth, it’s called tartar.

TMD – An acronym for temperomandibular disorder, this condition occurs when the joints that open and close your jaw become fatigued, which strains the associated nerves and causes discomfort. Other symptoms include headaches, ringing in the ears, tingling in the extremities, and neck pain.

Reasons Why You Should Smile

Did you know that it takes fewer muscles to smile than frown? This powerful tool often gets lost in the busyness of our lives. Not only is smiling easier on your face, but it can significantly improve your mood and give somebody else’s day a lift.

Family Dentist Serving Stittsville, Kanata, Carp, Ottawa

Family Dentist Serving Stittsville, Kanata, Carp, Ottawa

The benefits of smiling include:

Connects you with other people
When you share a smile with another person, you form an instant bond. By boosting that individual’s mood, you can reduce stress levels and possibly encourage that person to try on a smile. Actually, you can use a smile as currency to successfully navigate awkward social situations and gather any assistance you need.

Changes your perspective
If you feel anger or stress, smiling can give your attitude a much-needed adjustment. Typically, smiling enables your body to release endorphins, wonderful chemicals that make you feel happy.

It doesn’t cost a thing
Often, we get busy and don’t have the time, energy, or resources to help others. Your smile brightens the lives of anyone who sees it and it only takes a minute or less.

Helps fight illness
People who smile a lot tend to be more optimistic, which can promote a stronger immune system and keep you healthy.

Why not smile?
Try to remember that if you don’t smile, your other options are frowning or wearing a blank expression across your face. Given those choices, smiling seems like the best alternative.

Boosts your confidence
When you smile, you often walk taller and carry yourself in a more self-assured manner.

mouth guard Dentist Serving Stittsville, Kanata, Carp, Ottawa and Surrounding Areas

Several types are available:

Stock guards Pre-formed and ready to wear, stock mouth guards can be purchased at sporting goods stores or other retailers. While inexpensive, you cannot alter their fit, so these mouth guards provide little or no protection. Talking and breathing can also be difficult.

Boil and bite guards Offering more coverage than stock mouth guards, boil and bite appliances are constructed from thermoplastic material. You place the device in hot water to soften it and shape it around the teeth for a better fit.

Custom guards Individually designed, custom mouth guards are more expensive than the other options, but they offer the best coverage, protection and comfort. For a custom appliance, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and send it to a dental lab, where skilled technicians will generate your personal mouth guard.  Capital Smiledocs Dental is a provider of quality Under Armour Mouth guards.

The Reality of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal Dentist Serving Stittsville, Kanata, Carp, Ottawa and Surrounding Areas

No one wants to have a root canal, but this conservative dental treatment often gets a bad rap. Root canals are used to repair damaged teeth and prevent the need for extraction. Many people don’t realize that missing teeth can have serious oral health consequences, such as alignment problems, chewing difficulties, and additional tooth loss. With a root canal, your dentist can relieve your pain, protect your smile, and save you money.

What is a root canal? During this procedure, your dentist will remove diseased tissue, disinfect the area, and seal off the tooth. Your doctor will also place a dental crown to complete the restoration.

Why would I need a root canal? If your tooth sustains severe trauma or you have deep decay, a root canal maybe the only option to save the tooth. Your teeth contain an inner nerve core called pulp, which provides nutrients and blood supply to the teeth. If that area is injured, the pulp may die, causing infection to build inside a tooth.

Will it hurt? Advances in dentistry allow your doctor to keep you comfortable during the procedure. The dentist will numb the area before beginning the root canal. If you are particularly concerned, talk with your dentist about sedation options such as nitrous oxide gas or oral sedation. Most people don’t find the procedure any worse than a dental filling.

What if I don’t have a root canal? The infection inside your tooth won’t disappear without treatment. You risk nerve damage, an abscess, or even tooth loss if you don’t address the problem.

If you have any questions regarding root canals, dental hygiene or oral health, contact Capital Smiledocs Dental. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa South. Stittsville, Carp, Kanata, Ottawa and surrounding family Dentist.
