Toothache

Toothache – How Did You Hurt Your Teeth Today?

Every day we are doing things to hurt our teeth and we don’t even know it. Some of the harmful habits we picked up because somebody told us that they were actually good for you. Well, what is good for one part of you may not be so great for another part.

toothache ottawa dentist

toothache

Here’s five ways we are hurting our teeth:

  1. Using sports drinks after a workout. Sports drinks have become extremely popular but they aren’t great for your teeth. The drinks are typically full of sugars which act as food for oral bacteria. On top of that, the pH levels in many of these drinks can cause your tooth enamel to wear away. The combination leaves you with teeth that are open to decay and a well-fed army of bacteria ready to go to work on them!
  2. Drinking wine. Even though we have been told that a glass a day is good for your heart, it isn’t so good for your pearly whites. This goes beyond the issues of stains from red wine. It seems that the acidity in wine, both white and red, can also erode your tooth enamel. To avoid this don’t swish the wine around in your mouth — take small sips and rinse your mouth with water after drinking.
  3. Going on a diet. Losing a few pounds is good for your health, going on a very restrictive diet might deprive you of  vitamins and minerals you need for your healthy smile. Poor nutrition can also affect your immune system leaving you susceptible to infections such as periodontal disease. Proper nutrition and exercise are the keys to losing weight, crash diets are never the answer.
  4. Drinking bottled water. Bottled water typically does not contain fluoride like many municipal water systems do. Fluoride is controversial for some but it has been safely added to water supplies for many years and has drastically cut the rate of cavities in children and adults in this country. This substance helps remineralize the teeth making them stronger and resistant to decay.
  5. Adding lemon juice to your water. Many trendy diet books suggest adding a squeeze of lemon juice to your water to promote weight loss. It really just makes the water taste a little better so you’ll drink more of it. While drinking lots of water is fine, the added acids from the citrus juice are bathing your teeth and weakening your dental enamel all day long. Keep drinking water, just make it plain tap water.

What can you do to protect your teeth if you don’t want to give up anything on this list? Most people think they should brush their teeth immediately – not a good idea. Your enamel has been softened by the acids and scrubbing at it with a brush will only make matters worse. Rinse your mouth with plain water or better yet, chew a piece of sugar-free gum. The xylitol found in sugar-free gum actually inhibits oral bacteria and increases your saliva flow which will begin to remineralize your teeth. Follow up with a good brushing and flossing about an hour later.

If your habits have left you with a smile that is not as healthy and bright as it once was you have many options for restoring your smile. Cosmetic dentistry using veneers can reshape, rebuild and restore your naturally beautiful smile and dental tooth whitening is highly effective for removing stains on teeth.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease – Healthy gums may lead to healthy lungs

Maintaining periodontal health may contribute to a healthy respiratory system, according to research published in the Journal of Periodontology. A new study suggests that periodontal disease may increase the risk for respiratory infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. These infections, which are caused when bacteria from the upper throat are inhaled into the lower respiratory tract, can be severely debilitating and are one of the leading causes of death in North America.

periodontal disease ottawa

periodontal disease

The study included 200 participants between the ages of 20 and 60 with at least 20 natural teeth. Half of the participants were hospitalized patients with a respiratory disease such as pneumonia, COPD, or acute bronchitis, and the other half were healthy control subjects with no history of respiratory disease. Each participant underwent a comprehensive oral evaluation to measure periodontal health status.

The study found that patients with respiratory diseases had worse periodontal health than the control group, suggesting a relationship between respiratory disease and periodontal disease. Researchers suspect that the presence of oral pathogens associated with periodontal disease may increase a patient’s risk of developing or exacerbating respiratory disease. However, the study authors note that additional studies are needed to more conclusively understand this link.

 periodontal disease stittsville

“Pulmonary diseases can be severely disabling and debilitating,” says Donald S. Clem, DDS, President of the American Academy of Periodontology. “By working with your dentist, you may actually be able to prevent or diminish the progression of harmful diseases such as pneumonia or COPD. This study provides yet another example of how periodontal health plays a role in keeping other systems of the body healthy.”

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and other structures supporting the teeth. Previous research has associated gum disease with other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dr. Clem stressed the importance of routine oral care in helping to prevent periodontal disease. “Taking good care of your periodontal health involves daily tooth brushing and flossing. You should also expect to get a comprehensive periodontal evaluation every year,” he advised. A dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa can conduct a comprehensive exam to assess your periodontal disease status.  Contact Capital Smiledocs Dental today to schedule an appointment.

Gum Disease

Gum Disease – beside brushing, five ways to promote healthy teeth and gums!

Routine tooth brushing and flossing and regular check-ups by a dental professional remain the cornerstone of a healthy mouth. However, according to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), pairing a few well-known healthy-lifestyle habits with your daily oral health regimen may also help reduce your risk for gum disease and periodontal disease.

peridontal disease

gum disease

What are Gum disease and periodontal disease?

Gum disease and periodontal disease are chronic inflammatory diseases that affect the gum tissue and other structures supporting the teeth. If left untreated, gum disease and periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and may also interfere with other systems of the body. Several research studies have indicated that one’s periodontal health may be related to overall health. Therefore, it is crucial that you do everything you can to establish good periodontal health.

The following tips may help sustain healthy teeth and gums while also helping you live an overall healthy lifestyle:

  • Eat and drink up. It is well known that eating a balanced diet leads to proper nutrition and helps keep the body running effectively. Studies published in the Journal of Periodontology (JOP) have also shown that certain foods can promote teeth and gum health. Foods containing omega-3, calcium, vitamin D and even honey have all been shown to reduce the incidence or severity of periodontal disease.
  • Hit the gym. Frequent exercise is a recognized way to avoid being overweight, and it may ultimately reduce your risk of periodontal disease. In a study published in the Journal of Periodontology, researchers found that subjects who maintained a healthy weight and had high levels of physical fitness had a lower incidence of severe periodontitis than those that did not exercise.
  • Stress less. Stress can lead to a variety of health complications, including periodontal disease. Research published in the JOP showed a relationship between stress and periodontal disease. Increased levels of cortisol, which the body releases when experiencing stress, can intensify the destruction of the gums and bone due to periodontal disease. In addition, another JOP study indicated that people experiencing stress are more likely to neglect their oral hygiene.
  • Kick the habit. Smoking is not only a leading cause of respiratory and cardiovascular disease in the United States, it is also a major risk factor for periodontal disease.Several research studies have shown that smoking not only increases the chance of developing periodontal disease, but it can also affect the success of treatments for existing periodontal disease.
  • See the doctor. Regular check-ups by a physician can help with early diagnosis of several health issues, including periodontal disease. A large body of research associates gum disease with other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Therefore, by screening for systemic disease early and receiving any needed treatment, you may also benefit your periodontal health.

Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville emphasizes that while these tips may contribute to healthy teeth and gums, the benefit of routine oral care cannot be discounted. Root Canals No Laughing Matter

Root Canal Therapy No Joke

At Capital Smiledocs Dental in in Stittsville and Ottawa ,we want patients to know that having a root canal is too important to joke about. Root canal therapy has been the subject of jokes about dental pain for many years. This is probably because many years ago it was not a pleasant procedure. Root canal therapy can stop the throbbing pain while saving the infected tooth and avoiding serious infection spreading throughout the body. Good news — modern anesthetics allow this treatment with little or no discomfort.
root canal ottawa

a root canal can save your tooth

So what is a root canal and why do I need this procedure?

Root canal therapy (also called endodontic therapy) deals with the inside structure of the tooth called the pulp. The pulp inside your tooth is made up of a complex of arteries, veins, nerves and lymphatic vessels. The pulp is what gives nourishment to the tooth from within keeping the tooth resilient and strong. The pulp of your tooth is also the part that feels the difference between hot and cold.

Problems with the pulp can start with bacterial infections caused by tooth decay, cracks in the tooth or trauma. The tissue in the tooth begins to break down and die and you begin to feel pain. You may have symptoms of sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers for several minutes or even hours.  Sometimes you can have severe pain when you chew food.  In some cases, the pain may occur spontaneously while you are sitting or lying down.  In advanced situations, you may notice a swelling on your gums, what is known as a gum boil.  This is the start of an abscess forming underneath the gum inside the jaw bone.  There may also be a bad taste you your mouth or you may see white discharge from the gum boil.

At this point you can either remove the tooth or keep the tooth by cleaning out the pulp and replacing it with a biocompatible sealer to fill the space — a root canal. Anesthetics ensure that you don’t feel discomfort during the procedure.

For those patients with significant anxiety, longer treatments, difficulty numbing with anesthetic, or back and neck pain, oral sedation is a wonderful alternative. Sedation dentistry uses oral sedatives to put patients into a state that is relaxed but still awake and aware, making their visit enjoyable and pain free.

Sedation dentistry can combine lengthy, numerous visits into one with sleep dentistry

Sedation dentistry at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa, is particularly beneficial for reconstructive dentistry and restorative dentistry visits. Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers – You Can Get the Smile Makeover You Always Wanted At Capital Smiledocs Dental

Porcelain veneers smile makeover in Stittsville

porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are the ultimate solution to broken, chipped, and discolored teeth.  Also known as, teeth veneers or dental veneers, they can even realign the appearance of crooked teeth and fix the gaps between your teeth.  With modern sedation dentistry techniques, your cosmetic dentist can provide you with beautiful porcelain veneers in just two relaxing and stress-free visits to the dentist. Capital Smiledocs Dental provides teeth veneers with sedation dentistry right here in the Ottawa and Stittsville areas.

How dental veneers help

So many people wake up every morning unsatisfied with the appearance of their teeth, but with the advancements available in modern cosmetic dentistry, this situation is no longer necessary.  With dental veneers, you can achieve the smile makeover of your dreams.

Dental veneers are a modern dental technology that stems from the well-known practice of dental bonding.  For many years, cosmetic dentists have been able to use special products to make permanent and lasting bonds with your original tooth material.  Today, cosmetic dentists like Dr. Andrew Madej and Dr. William  use the same science to adhere a wafer-thin veneer of porcelain to the enamel of your teeth.  Combined with the natural strength of your tooth, the porcelain becomes a permanent, durable, and beautiful aspect of your teeth.

Moreover, porcelain veneers add a protective coating to your natural teeth, and because of the way the porcelain materials expand and contract in a manner that mirrors your original tooth structures, they resemble natural tooth structure.  Dental veneers are highly resistant to stains, more so than other dental bonding techniques, and because of the special properties of the porcelain used, the light passes through them as it does through your natural tooth enamel, which creates a beautiful and sparkling luster that will make you proud to flash your pearly whites.  You will not believe the jewel-like brilliance of the new smile you can achieve through porcelain veneers.

But what if I am too afraid?

Some people might have seen the gorgeous results that dental veneers have had on the teeth of a friend, but they are too afraid to go to the dentist and get the procedure done on their own teeth.  For people who are too afraid of the dentist to get this kind of smile makeover, Capital Smiledocs Dental in the Ottawa and Stittsville areas utilizes modern techniques in sedation dentistry to make your experience getting teeth veneers more relaxing and comfortable.  With sedation dentistry, you will simply take a pill or breathe nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, to achieve a  state of relaxation. Although you will still be conscious, you will be in such a highly relaxed and comfortable state, that you will feel no pain.  In fact, by the time your procedure is complete, you may not even remember very much from the experience.

Anyone who lives in the Ottawa and Stittsville areas can contact Capital Smiledocs Dental Care for more information about how porcelain veneers and sedation dentistry can give them the Hollywood smile-makeover they have always wanted.

Metal Free Dentistry

Metal-Free Dentistry from Capital Smiledocs Dental

If you’ve been told recently that you have a cavity, you’re going to need a filling. And to help patients with their filling needs, Capital Smiledocs Dentalin Stittsville and Ottawauses metal-free dentistry.

What that means is that our fillings are made of porcelain instead of the mercury, zinc, tin, silver, and copper you’ll find in traditional amalgam fillings. And that’s great news for patients.

metal free dentistry Stittsville

metal free dentistry

The Benefits of Porcelain and Composite Fillings

One of the major benefits of porcelain and composite fillings is that they actually support tooth’s natural structure, preserving its natural lifespan in the process and protecting it from bacteria.

But amalgam fillings, on the other hand, can contract and expand based on temperature, and can even change shape with the impact of chewing. This change in shape can expose a vulnerable tooth to bacteria and the chance for further decay.

But because porcelain and composite fillings bond so firmly to teeth, your oral health is assured.

The primary reason, though, that Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa offers metal-free dentistry is that amalgam fillings contain mercury, a toxic material. It’s generally been found that the levels of mercury in amalgams are safe, but for patients who may be pregnant, allergic to mercury, or have any number of other factors, it may still be best to avoid amalgam fillings.

And so that’s why Capital Smiledocs Dental in Stittsville and Ottawa believes in metal-free dentistry. Amalgam fillings may or may not pose any threat to oral health, but we really don’t want to take that chance with patients.

Have You Been Told You Need a Filling?

If you’ve been told recently that you need a filling but your dentist only offers amalgam fillings, call us to book an appointment with one of our offices to talk to us about porcelain and composite fillings. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa.

Porcelain Veneers

Have you ever thought about giving your smile a fresh start? If you’re unhappy or even embarrassed by teeth that are stained, cracked, chipped, or misaligned, Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville has a cosmetic solution that can help—porcelain veneers.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, ceramic shells of material – called veneers They are placed over the front surface of your teeth to hide imperfections. They’re very natural looking, and are colored to fit in alongside your natural teeth – under the guidance of a professional cosmetic dentist at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville , your new veneers will be virtually indistinguishable from real teeth. Plus, your new teeth will be just as durable as real teeth.

What’s more, the porcelain veneers can be shaded to match surrounding teeth and are designed with your facial features as well as your skin, hair, and eye color in mind.

porcelain veneers stittsville

porcelain veneers

Here’s how the porcelain veneers process works.

When you come in, one of our cosmetic dentists will talk with you about exactly how you want your smile to look. Then, once we have an idea of how we’ll be helping you, we’ll take an impression of your teeth, photos of your teeth, face shape and complexion, hair colour and a record of how your teeth fits together.  These important information are sent to our lab. The lab will create a model showing how your teeth will look like with the customized veneers using the crucial information we collected.  If you are happy with the smile design, we will prepare your teeth for the porcelain veneers and take a detailed impression of your teeth.  Temporary veneers will be placed on your teeth so that you can see how they look and feel inside your mouth.  This allows you to “test drive” and try the porcelain veneers out.  When your veneers have been finished, all that’s left for us to do is apply them to your teeth, giving your smile the fresh start you’ve dreamed of.

Did you know sedation dentistry isn’t just for anxiety? Patients who avoid dental visit for other reasons can also benefit.

Some patients, for instance, have a strong gag reflex. This can turn even the most casual and routine of dental appointments into an unpleasant experience. Others may have a neuromuscular condition, like TMJ dysfunction, that makes it difficult to hold their mouths open for long periods of time. And still others may avoid the dentist because sitting in a dental chair triggers neck or back pain. In each case, sedation dentistry can make it possible for patients to receive comfortable, relaxing treatment.

Sedation Dentistry – The ultimate in relaxation… without needles!

Oral conscious sedation, or OCS, utilizes oral sedative medication to significantly reduce your fears and discomfort. Unlike IV sedation, OCS does not require needles to administer.

Benefits of Oral Conscious Sedation:

  • It’s very effective for mild to moderate anxiety
  • It’s safe and easy
  • You can breathe and speak on your own
  • It’s less expensive than IV sedation

In many cases, you can get ALL of your dental work done in one or two visits. Unlike general anesthesia, which renders patients completely unconscious, oral conscious sedation leaves you able to speak and breathe on your own. Although you will not actually be asleep, you will enjoy a heightened state of relaxation. Your appointment will be a dream and hours in the chair will feel like minutes.

Do You Still Have Questions About Sedation Dentistry?

If you still have questions about what sedation dentistry is, how it works, and which type is most right for you, come to one of our Capital Smiledocs Dental offices for an appointment. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa.

Dental Implant

Dental Implant- tooth replacement that looks and feels like a natural tooth from Capital Smiledocs Dental

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason.

capital smiledocs dental implant

dental implant

While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.

Dental implants are so natural-looking and feeling, you may forget you ever lost a tooth. You know that your confidence about your teeth affects how you feel about yourself, both personally and professionally. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures don’t feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing. If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to smile, speak and eat again with comfort and confidence, there is good news! Dental implants are teeth that can look and feel just like your own!  Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa or Stittsville offers dental implant solutions for missing teeth. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants.

What Dental Implants Can Do?

  1. Replace one or more teeth without affecting bordering teeth.
  2. Support a bridge and eliminate the need for a removable partial denture.
  3. Provide support for a denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

Advantages of Dental Implants Over Dentures or a Bridge

Every way you look at it, dental implants are a better solution to the problem of missing teeth.

  • Esthetic  Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth! Since dental implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss and gum recession that often accompany bridgework and dentures. No one will ever know that you have a replacement tooth.
  • Tooth-saving  Dental implants don’t sacrifice the quality of your adjacent teeth like a bridge does because neighboring teeth are not altered to support the implant. More of your own teeth are left untouched, a significant long-term benefit to your oral health!
  • Confidence  Dental implants will allow you to once again speak and eat with comfort and confidence! They are secure and offer freedom from the clicks and wobbles of dentures. They’ll allow you to say goodbye to worries about misplaced dentures and messy pastes and glues.
  • Reliable   The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable. They are considered an excellent option for tooth replacement.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health. Adequate bone in your jaw is needed to support the implant, and the best candidates have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease.

What Is Treatment Like?

Call Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa or Stittsville and one of our dentist will consult with you to determine if you are a candidate for an implant. Depending on your specific condition and the amount of bone you have, the dentist will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs.

  • Replacing a Single Tooth  If you are missing a single tooth, one implant and a crown can replace it. A dental implant replaces both the lost natural tooth and its root.
  • Replacing Several Teeth  If you are missing several teeth, implant-supported bridges can replace them. Dental implants will replace both your lost natural teeth and some of the roots.
  • Replacing All of Your Teeth  If you are missing all of your teeth, an implant-supported full bridge or full denture can replace them. Dental implants will replace both your lost natural teeth and some of the roots.
  • Sinus Augmentation  A key to implant success is the quantity and quality of the bone where the implant is to be placed. The upper back jaw has traditionally been one of the most difficult areas to successfully place dental implants due to insufficient bone quantity and quality and the close proximity to the sinus. Sinus augmentation can help correct this problem by raising the sinus floor and developing bone for the placement of dental implants.
  • Ridge Modification   Deformities in the upper or lower jaw can leave you with inadequate bone in which to place dental implants. To correct the problem, the gum is lifted away from the ridge to expose the bony defect. The defect is then filled with bone or bone substitute to build up the ridge. Ridge modification has been shown to greatly improve appearance and increase your chances for successful implants that can last for years to come.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

As you know, your own teeth require conscientious at-home oral care and regular dental visits. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care. In order to keep your implant clean and plaque-free, brushing and flossing still apply!

dental implant stittsville

After treatment, our dentist will work closely with you to develop the best care plan for you. Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

sedation dentistry

Dental anxiety is a very real problem, and one that keeps millions of patients from seeking regular care each year. That’s why Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville offers sedation dentistry.

With sedation dentistry, patients who have put off checkups and cleanings in the past because of anxiety can finally experience relaxing treatment that will help them achieve their optimal oral health.

Capital Smiledocs dental sedation dentistry

Capital Smiledocs Dental Has Three Options to Choose From

The first option is nitrous oxide, better known as “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is administered through a breathing mask and wears off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home afterwards. It’s completely safe for adults and children alike, and is a great choice for patients who want to remain conscious during their appointment.

Oral sedation, our second option, is administered in the form of a small pill you’ll take before your appointment. Like nitrous oxide, it’s powerful enough to induce feelings of relaxation yet light enough for you to remain conscious during your appointment. Unlike nitrous oxide, though, oral sedation takes longer to wear off, so you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home afterwards.

Combination of or sedation and nitrous oxide is our third, and most powerful, option for patients. The combination makes patients feel very relaxed.  They often fall asleep during the appointment and wakes up at the end of treatment.  You’ll need someone with you to drive you home once your appointment is finished.

Comfortable Root Canal Therapy at Capital Smiledocs Dental

root canal

Do the words “root canal” send shivers down your spine? For many patients it does. The fear likely stems from the distant past, when root canals were performed without modern tools or anesthetics (freezing). Current anesthetics can create quick and profound numbness so that you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.  With modern nickle titanium technology, our instruments at Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville can effectively and efficiently clean out the infection from your tooth, making it healthy again.  Dr. Andrew Madej and Dr. William Vu have recently taken an advanced root canal course at the prestigious IDEA institute in San Francisco, California.  Both doctors pride themselves in staying current with the latest techniques and technology so they can deliver quality modern dental care.

So, What Is A Root Canal?

A root canal is a treatment to remove the infection from inside the tooth. The infection can occur after a deep cavity, large crack, or fracture leaves the inside of the tooth susceptible to bacteria. The rest is often pain and swelling, which can be alleviated with root canal treatment.

root canal therapy

root canal will alleviate dental pain

When we’ve removed the infected nerve, we’ll remove any debris or bacteria left behind and fill your canal with a special sealer. The last step is putting a filling on the exterior of your tooth, and then you’re done.

Follow-up care involves thorough brushing and flossing at home and regular visits to one of our Capital Smiledocs Dental offices in Ottawa or Stittsville for cleanings and checkups. After root canal treatment has been completed, your restored tooth can potentially last you for a lifetime.

Today’s root canal treatment is a safe, effective, and relatively comfortable procedure, often completed in just one visit.

Still Have Questions?

If you still have questions about concerns about root canal therapy, don’t hesitate to give one of our offices a call. We have offices in both Ottawa and Stittsville.  One of our doctors would be happy to meet with you.

Bad Breath

What Can I Do To Avoid Bad Breath?

halitosis

halitosis

Bad breath can be embarrassing.  If you’re on a date or in an important business meeting with a client, bad breath can significantly impact how others view you and how you view yourself.

But not only is bad breath embarrassing, it can also be a sign of a larger problem like gum disease.

So, what can you do to help your smile?

Your first step should be scheduling an appointment with one of our Capital Smiledocs Dental offices in Ottawa or Stittsville.  Chronic bad breath (halitosis) caused by gum disease can’t always be treated by simply spending more time brushing and flossing. Further treatment may be required.

But even if you do need extra help, brushing longer or more often isn’t a bad idea. In fact, not brushing or flossing enough is often what causes halitosis in the first place. We recommend brushing at least twice a day, flossing at least once, and gargling with a quality mouthwash. All three of these activities combined can do a lot to keep your smile clean and fresh.

What’s more, certain foods, such as garlic and onions, and dry mouth have been known to contribute to bad breath. Avoiding these particular foods and drinking plenty of water can do a lot help keep patients with halitosis.

bad breath

The main health problems associated with bad breath are:

  1. Periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque buildup on the teeth. Bacteria found in the transparent and sticky substance can irritate the gums. If not treated on time, periodontal disease can destroy gum tissue and bone structure supporting the teeth.
  2. Oral trush. Thrush is caused by forms of a fungus called Candida. A small amount of this fungus lives in your mouth most of the time. It is usually kept in check by your immune system and other types of germs that also normally live in your mouth. However, when your immune system is weak, the fungus can grow.
  3. Dental decay
  4. Xerostomia (dry mouth). Saliva is necessary to clean your mouth of food from debris, eliminate dead cells from the tongue, gums and cheeks, and  neutralize acids in the mouth. If these cells are not removed, they decompose inside the mouth, causing bad breath.
  5. Side effects of certain drugs.
  6. Salivary glands disorders.
  7. Some diseases and conditions such as severe respiratory tract infections (pneumonia or bronchitis), chronic sinus infection, diabetes, chronic esophageal reflux disease.

Dental Implants

Replace Your Traditional Dentures with Dental Implants from Capital Smiledocs Dental

 dental implant

If you have dentures, you’ve probably noticed how your smile has changed. For one thing, your gums have shrunk, leading you to need further adjustments. For another, foods that never used to be a problem are now almost impossible to eat. You just can’t sink your teeth into them the way you used to.  Your jaw bone has also shrunk, causing your cheeks to collapse, emphasizing your wrinkles and making you look older than you really are!  Your food does not taste the same since the dentures cover up some of your taste buds.  You probably have sore spots inside your mouth since your dentures move around causing friction on you tissue.

Why are these things happening? Because traditional dentures only replace your teeth, not the root that connects your teeth to your jawbone. As a result, your jaw bone shrinks.

But with dental implants from Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville, this isn’t a problem. Dental implants replace your teeth and your missing roots, preserving your jawbone naturally and resulting in a stronger smile that can last for years to come.

A Longer-lasting Smile with Improved Function

Once we know you’re a candidate for dental implants, the first step in transforming your smile is placing your new “roots.” Made of bio-compatible titanium, one “root,” or post, will be placed for each tooth that will be anchoring your new dentures. As the site of your placements heals, a natural bond forms between your posts and your jawbone.

It’s this bond that will give your finished dentures a solid foundation, leaving you with a smile that feels as natural as it looks. But dental implants aren’t just used to replace dentures. Whether you’re replacing several teeth or just one, Capital Smiledocs Dental in Ottawa and Stittsville can help.

Dry Mouth – Sign and symptoms, common causes and ways to relieve dry mouth

With regular saliva production, your teeth are constantly bathed in a mineral-rich solution that helps keep your teeth strong and resistant to decay. While saliva is essential for maintaining oral health and quality of life, at least 25 million North Americans have inadequate salivary flow or composition, and lack the cleansing and protective functions provided by this important fluid.  Each day, a healthy adult normally produces around one-and-a-half liters of saliva, making it easier to talk, swallow, taste, digest food and perform other important functions that often go unnoticed. Those not producing adequate saliva may experience some common symptoms of dry mouth.

xerostomia

Signs and Symptoms

At some point, most people will experience the short-term sensation of oral dryness because of nervousness, stress or just being upset. This is normal and does not have any long-term consequences. But chronic cases of dry mouth persist for longer periods of time. Common symptoms include trouble eating, speaking and chewing, burning sensations, or a frequent need to sip water while eating.

dry mouth

Dry mouth becomes a problem when symptoms occur all or most of the time and can cause serious problems for your oral health. Drying irritates the soft tissues in the mouth, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection.

Without the cleansing and shielding effects of adequate saliva flow, tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease become much more common. Constant dryness and the lack of protection provided by saliva may contribute to bad breath. Dry mouth can make full dentures become less comfortable to wear because there is no thin film of saliva to help them adhere properly to oral tissues. Insufficient saliva can also result in painful denture sores, dry and cracked lips, and increased risks of oral infection.

Common Causes

Once considered an inevitable part of aging, dry mouth is now commonly associated with certain medications and autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome. Both of these can reduce salivary production or alter its composition, but experts agree that the primary cause of dry mouth is the use of medications.

Radiation treatment for head and neck cancer is also an important cause of severe dry mouth. The treatment can produce significant damage to the salivary glands, resulting in diminished saliva production and extreme dry mouth in many cases.

Saliva plays an important role in maintaining oral health.  With decreased saliva flow, we can see an increase in plaque accumulation and the incidence and severity of periodontal diseases.

How to Relieve Dry Mouth

Individuals with dry mouth should have regular dental checkups for evaluation and treatment.  Capital Smiledocs Dental has two convenient offices in Ottawa and Stittsville.  Be sure to carry an up-to-date medication list at all times, and tell us what medications you are taking and other information about your health at each appointment.  Since dry mouth could be caused due to various reasons, the underlying cause must be identified first. If dryness is caused due to a medical condition, then treating that underlying disease will surely help. If the use of any drug is causing dry mouth, then it must be replaced. If your mouth feels very dry and you are having a tough time swallowing food, you could use artificial saliva substitutes. Also, make sure that you keep yourself well-hydrated at all times. Though drinking water cannot be called a complete cure for dry mouth syndrome, intake of water and other fluids can surely provide relief. Certain drugs can also be used for stimulating the salivary glands. Chewing sugar free gum is one of the common dry mouth remedies. Not only is dry mouth a discomforting and annoying condition, it can also make one prone to developing dental problems. If you are suffering from this condition, you must pay attention to the aspect of dental health. You can use toothpastes, mouthwashes or sprays that are specifically meant for those who are suffering from this condition. Alcohol can aggravate this problem, therefore, make sure that you don’t use an alcohol-based mouthwash. One must refrain from consumption of caffeinated drinks, alcohol or tobacco.

If you have dry mouth you have to be extra attentive to your personal dental routine. Please ask us for tips on how to make your condition more comfortable, and keep your teeth and mouth healthy. If you have dry mouth problems contact us today to schedule your first appointment. We have offices in both Ottawa and Stittsville.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis – types of gum disease

Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in plaque (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.

 gingivitis

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.

Gum Disease

Periodontitis

Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, plaque can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.

There are many forms of periodontitis. The most common ones include the following.

  • Aggressive periodontitis occurs in patients who are otherwise clinically healthy. Common features include rapid attachment loss and bone destruction and familial aggregation.
  • Chronic periodontitis results in inflammation within the supporting tissues of the teeth, progressive attachment and bone loss. This is the most frequently occurring form of periodontitis and is characterized by pocket formation and/or recession of the gingiva. It is prevalent in adults, but can occur at any age. Progression of attachment loss usually occurs slowly, but periods of rapid progression can occur.
  • Periodontitis as a manifestation of systemic diseases often begins at a young age. Systemic conditions such as heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes are associated with this form of periodontitis.
  • Necrotizing periodontal disease is an infection characterized by necrosis of gingival tissues, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. These lesions are most commonly observed in individuals with systemic conditions such as HIV infection, malnutrition and immunosuppression.

If you have gingivitis or periodontitis and need treatment, call us to book an appointment. We have two convenient locations in Stittsville and Ottawa.
