What is sedation dentistry and am I a candidate?
Conscious sedation dentistry allows for both adults and children to complete the dental care that they require. Sedation is a great option for anyone who is anxious or afraid of having a needle, hearing the sound of the drill or simply even going into the dental office!

Who would benefit from sedation dentistry?
Sedation would also benefit those who have a strong gag reflex since the medication helps to alleviate the gagging response. For those who experience sore jaw muscles during a long dental appointment, sedation helps to relax the muscles and make the appointment more comfortable. Sedation is beneficial for those who lead a busy lifestyle and would like to do as much as possible in one dental visit. People who have difficulty being completely frozen would also benefit from sedation dentistry since sedation aids in pain control.
Would my fearful child benefit from sedation dentistry?
Conscious sedation is a wonderful option for children who are afraid of dental treatment such as fillings or extractions. It is important for such dental treatment to be done and sedation enables kids to have the necessary dental work completed in just one easy appointment! The child will thereby have a positive and comfortable experience and will not be traumatized by a negative experience for the rest of his/her life.
How does sedation dentistry work?
With oral conscious sedation dentistry you can have dental work completed in relaxed way! Your comfortable state can be achieved with nitrous (laughing) gas, sedation pills or a combination of the two. During the appointment we will assess your level of sedation and ensure that you are at ease throughout. You can have all the required dental care completed and thereby return to excellent oral health!
With oral conscious sedation, hours will seem like minutes! Luckily, sedation medications have an amnesic effect which means most individuals have very little, if any, memory of the sights, smells or sounds of the visit. Another benefit of sedation dentistry is that it relaxes a strong gag reflex, making a dental appointment much more comfortable.

Your Dental Health and Pregnancy

When you are having a baby, you have lots to think about for nine months. Most moms-to-be spend time picking out layettes, creating nurseries and selecting names. Practically every choice you make is centered on the new baby. During this exciting time, you need to take care of your body, which includes thinking about your oral health.
The hormonal changes in a woman’s body can affect the health of teeth and gums.
These tips will help you protect your smile and your unborn baby.
Before You Conceive
Try to schedule a dental checkup to make sure your mouth is in good condition so that the dentist can address any problems. It’s best to handle any major restorative work when you aren’t expecting. The same is true for X-rays. Being proactive with your treatment will ensure optimal dental health once you actually become pregnant.
During Pregnancy
If you need routine care during pregnancy, don’t schedule it during the first trimester or at the end of the third trimester; the second trimester is the optimal time for dental exams. Though you may feel exhausted and overwhelmed, remember to brush and floss frequently. Good home care will prevent issues like gum disease, which can increase the risk of pre-term births.
After You Give Birth
Once the baby arrives, you will probably be consumed with caring for your newborn. Take time to address any problems you developed during pregnancy to keep your smile healthy and strong.
